Improved definition and understanding of large-scale
changes in the physical environment

At present we are working on simulations of the ocean variability over the past five decades for which observations are available.  Major large-scale changes are seen in the observations but the available data is rather sparse in both space and time.  Models are required to provide a more complete picture and to attribute the changes to specific external forcing terms and internal processes.  Data are required to force the models and to provide essential checks on the veracity of the model results.
